In a significant development, the Special Cell of Delhi Police has filed a charge sheet against news portal Newsclick in Delhi’s Patiala House Court, marking the first step in legal proceedings against the media outlet. The charge sheet, presented before Additional Sessions Judge Dr. Hardeep Kaur, also includes allegations against Newsclick’s founder and editor-in-chief, Prabir Purkayastha.

The charge sheet alleges that Newsclick received substantial sums of money for disseminating pro-China propaganda, prompting the police to launch an investigation into the matter. During the court proceedings, Additional Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar expressed dissatisfaction with the prolonged duration of the investigation, questioning the efficacy of the 150-day period granted to the police for completing their inquiry. The judge’s remarks highlight the need for expeditious handling of legal proceedings to ensure timely justice.
Prosecution’s Progress: Recovery of Evidence and Ongoing Examination
The prosecution, represented by Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Akhand Pratap Singh, informed the court about the significant strides made in the investigation. Notably, the police have recovered a substantial amount of digital data, including around four lakh emails and over 100 digital documents, which are currently under examination. Furthermore, one of the accused individuals is reportedly residing outside India, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation.
Extended Custody: Judicial Proceedings Against Arrested Accused
Meanwhile, the court extended the judicial custody of the arrested accused, including Prabir Purkayastha and Newsclick’s HR head Amit Chakraborty, until March 15, 2024. Both individuals were apprehended by Delhi Police under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in October of the previous year. The judicial process against the accused continues as they remain in custody.
