Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made a significant claim, revealing a conspiracy aimed at transforming the territories of Bangladesh and Myanmar into a Christian country, akin to East Timor. During a 14-party meeting at Gono Bhavan on Thursday, Hasina disclosed that a proposal had been made by an unnamed country through a foreign envoy to build an airbase in Bangladesh. However, she refrained from naming the country behind this scheme.
Election Support Tied to Airbase Proposal
PM Hasina stated that accepting the proposal would have guaranteed her Awami League government support in the upcoming January 7 elections. “If this proposal had been accepted, our government would not have faced any difficulty,” she said, as reported by The Daily Star. Despite the potential benefits, Hasina vowed to prevent such a situation from arising.
Accusations Against Opposition Party
In addition to the conspiracy claim, Sheikh Hasina accused the opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), of attempting to sabotage the forthcoming elections. She emphasized her commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Speculations on American Involvement
PM Hasina’s allegations have led to speculation about American involvement. She claimed that historically, trade activities have flowed through the Gulf and the Indian Ocean, and many eyes are on this strategic location. “There is no dispute, no conflict here. And I will not let this happen; letting this happen is a crime in my eyes,” she asserted.
Regarding the proposal to build an airbase, she mentioned, “This proposal came from a white man. It may seem that its target is only one country, but it is not so. I know where else they intend to go. Yes, there may be more trouble ahead, but there is no need to worry.” Although she did not name the country, it is widely believed to be the United States.
St. Martin’s Island: The Strategic Target
For years, Washington has reportedly eyed St. Martin’s Island, a small island in the northeastern Bay of Bengal, about 9 km south of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula. This area forms part of the southernmost region of Bangladesh, making it a strategic point of interest.
Commitment to National Sovereignty
PM Hasina reiterated her commitment to national sovereignty and stability, refusing to allow any foreign interference that could compromise Bangladesh’s integrity. “If I allow any country to build an airbase in Bangladesh, then I will not have any problem,” she noted, highlighting the external pressures but affirming her resolve to protect the nation’s interests.
In summary, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s revelations underscore her determination to prevent foreign influence from destabilizing Bangladesh and the region, while also drawing attention to the potential geopolitical maneuverings at play.
